How to write great cold emails

Writing cold emails can be challenging, especially if you’re trying to make a good first impression. The key to writing great cold emails is to understand your target audience, personalize your message, and provide value. In this blog post, we’ll explore some tips to help you write effective cold emails that get results.

1. Research your target audience

   Before you start writing your cold email, it’s essential to research your target audience. Try to find out as much as you can about the person or company you’re emailing. Look for common interests, mutual connections, or anything that could help you establish a connection.

2. Personalize your message

   Once you’ve done your research, it’s time to personalize your message. Use the recipient’s name, and mention something you have in common or a recent achievement of theirs. Avoid generic messages that sound like they were sent to a hundred other people.

3. Keep it short and sweet

   Your cold email should be short and to the point. Avoid long paragraphs and unnecessary details. The recipient should be able to read your email in a few seconds and understand its purpose.

The worst follow-ups are “hey just bumping this up”.

I hate it when I receive these. the best follow-ups provide even more value than the first email.

Don’t go at it alone

Being an entrepreneur can be a lonely journey. Especially if you’re getting started, you don’t have a network of people that understand what you are trying to do.

It really depends on where you are located, and if you are a social person or not.

But I’m sure you agree that having like-minded people around is useful when on this journey.

This is what I’ve found too.

In-person communities are great. You can meet. You can work together in a cafe.

But if not, find an online community for yourself.

Joining a community or group can help you level up your game in ways that working solo cannot.

In a group, the bar is higher, because everyone is striving to be better. If everyone is, naturally you are going to be as well.

Having an accountability partner who will hold you to your goals and offer constructive criticism can be invaluable. I’ll often message a friend and say “roast me”.

This way, I get honest, valuable feedback from someone I admire.

Additionally, being part of a group means you can learn from the mistakes of others and avoid making them yourself.

Sometimes, you have to make those mistakes to learn. Sometimes, you can avoid them by listening to someone a few steps ahead of you.

You'll also have access to a wider range of experiences and expertise that can help you grow your business faster.

So don't go it alone.

Join a community or group and take your entrepreneurship to the next level.

Break your frame of reality often

In the cushy world of careers, it's all too easy to simply "go with the flow." But when you hit a plateau, how do you break through?

Well, here's one idea that might just shake things up: surround yourself with someone who breaks your frame of reality.

This has worked so well for me.

When you're around people who challenge your beliefs and push you outside your comfort zone, your world expands.

It’s like when someone says something that sounds completely impossible to you but then they prove it.

Wouldn’t that break your frame of reality?

It’s like this story you may have heard:

Have you heard of the Roger Bannister sub-4-minute mile?

Before 1954, it was considered “impossible for a human to run that fast”. So nobody did it.

In 1954, Bannister became the first person to do so.

Guess what?

Following those years, several other runners began to break the 4-minute mile barrier as well. Because Roger Bannister broke their frame of reality.

That’s what you need. Someone to break your frame of reality.

I made this mistake early on when I had some money but not the wisdom to invest in myself. Instead, I spent months learning things that I could have learned in a week if I had the right guidance or access. It was a frustrating and time-consuming process.

As Alex Hormozi says…

“We pay for every lesson with either time or money. And we use the currency we value least.”

I valued my time the least. Which is why I spent months learning something that would take me weeks with a $200 course.

But then I had a realization: investing in myself and my business was the key to getting ahead. Now that I value my time more, I’d rather invest more money in a higher-quality course than spend months learning something the wrong way.

Since then, I've probably spent over $10,000 on courses, communities, coaching, and access. And you know what? I don't regret a single penny. In fact, I see it as an investment, not a cost.

Paying for access has allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals, learn from experts, and accelerate my growth. I've avoided costly mistakes, gained clarity on my vision and direction, and gotten support when I needed it most. And the return on my investment has already been more than the S&P500.

Of course, I'm not saying that you should go out and spend all your money on every course or community out there. It's important to be strategic and choose resources that align with your goals and values. But what I am suggesting is that paying for access is one of the best investments you can make in yourself and your business.

The aftereffect of a SuperBowl ad

Let’s run the math of a SuperBowl ad.

It costs $7m. It’s watched by about 100 million people. The CPM is $70. That’s not too bad.

Mr. Beast still thinks it’s too expensive hahah

But the problem is…

It’s almost back to normal 2 days after the event.

She didn’t sponsor the event though. So the only cost is her time and having to be there (which she probably wanted to anyway).

Don’t wait for anyone’s permission

If you want to achieve big things, you have to be willing to take risks and act without asking for permission. This simple mindset shift has helped me open up a new world of opportunities.

When you wait to ask for permission, it’s less unique, more expected, and more “normal”. When you do things without asking for permission, it’s out of the blue and more surprising.

This works especially well in business because the more you give, the more you get.

I used to be one of those people who always sought permission. But over the years, I've learned that taking a permissionless approach is the key to doing anything extraordinary.

If you keep waiting for people’s permission, the ones that don’t wait will get way ahead.

The same goes for other areas of life as well.

Think about it, when you stop asking for permission, you'll find yourself stepping into new territories and making things happen for yourself.

Living life to the fullest and realizing your full potential is what taking a permissionless approach can provide. Embrace vulnerability, face challenges head-on, and learn from failures. The result will be a life filled with excitement, growth, and happiness.

Some say 21 days. Others say more.

Let's rewind back to 2020.

I had 0 followers on Twitter. Knew no one. Had no connections (nor followed a newsletter like this).

I tweeted every single day. I commented on 5 pieces of content every day. I DMd at least one new person every day.

All for 90 days.

And I probably grew to 100 followers. It was very discouraging. But it was something. I had 100 new people following me.

One thing I realized was that consistency is super important on social media.

Unless you are Justin Bieber, your first post won't go viral.

Find your online community

So you're looking to build an online community?

That's awesome because having a community can be an amazing way to connect with people who share your interests, get support and feedback and even grow your business. But finding the right community can be tricky. So, let me share some tips on how to find your online community:

1. Figure out your niche and target audience: Before you start looking for a community, it's important to know what you're looking for. What's your niche? What kind of people do you want to surround yourself with? If you already know this, you’ll be surprised by how many people don’t know yet. It will help you narrow down your search and find the right community for you.

2. Look for existing communities: Once you know what you're looking for, start searching for existing communities online. There are tons of platforms that host communities, like subreddits, Twitter follows, LinkedIn pages etc. As you can see, they don’t have to be strict communities. Even personal brands on Twitter have built communities around their idealogy. Look for people/communities related to your niche and check out the size, engagement and most importantly, type of content they share.

3. Get in there and engage: So, you found a few communities that look promising? Great! Now it's time to get in there and start engaging with them. Join the community, participate in discussions and get to know the members. These discussions can be leaving comments on Twitter. Or joining an audio conversation (Twitter space). This will give you a sense of the community dynamics and whether it's the right fit for you.

4. Create your own community: If you start getting a lot of requests for more interaction, or you're getting a lot of engagement and feedback, that's a sign that it might be time to create your own community. In my case, it was audience building. A lot of people ask me how I built this audience on Twitter and this newsletter. So, I created this community where I can answer these questions as well as get members to interact and learn from each other. If you’re creating a community, choose a platform to host your community (I use skool), set some guidelines and rules, and actively engage with the community.

5. Maintain the quality of conversations in the community: Once you have your community, it's important to maintain the quality of conversations. This means setting guidelines, moderating discussions, and encouraging healthy and productive conversations. This will help create a positive and inclusive environment for your community members.

Building a community can bring so many benefits, like friendship, support and growth. So, go out there and find your tribe!

Gas app gets acquired!

If you remember, I covered Gas App about 3 months ago (link).

This is when they hit $1m in sales.

This week (3 months since my post), they got acquired by Discord.

And Nikita, the founder, posted this on his Twitter:
